Weekly Trust - Saturday, 09 July 2011
HUNDREDS of people have been rendered homeless in Katsina State yesterday by a flood shortly after heavy rainfall. Although there was no death, properties worth millions of naira were destroyed, just as many communities were forced out of their homes by the flood.
Affected areas, Weekly Trust observed include Kofar-Marusa, Kofar-Sauri, Sabuwar-Unguwa, Kofar-Kaura and Katsina Cikin-Gari among others. When Weekly Trust visited some of the affected areas, observed that, women and children were left stranded as their respective homes were consumed by flood.
Malama Aisha Isah told Weekly Trust that, “we have no other place to accommodate ourselve now. All our rooms have been taken over by water. My belongings have been destroyed by the flood”. She said, “Our major problem is how to cook for our children. This is the second incident we have witnessed since the beginning of this year’s rainy season. If care is not taken the flood will force the affected communities to vacate their homes forever”.
Weekly Trust observed that, the major causes of the flood are lack of adequate drainages and illegal erection of houses along water ways. Our correspondent observed that most of the affected houses were constructed along waterways, while in some areas there was provision of drainages.
